These tests form a good sample of what students in English-speaking countries do. Only by taking real tests that native English-speaking students experience can foreign students get a sense of the real English out there. The IELTS tests are believed to be substantially easier than what native English-speaking students have to do. IELTS level 6 reading is probably about somewhere between year 8 - 9. However, the ability to understand fiction, speaking and listening would be well below year 8 native English students.
To do a test, fill the requested information on the left side of the screen, then select a test by its radio button, then click on the button 'next'.
- English reading tests should cover a variety of texts, such as fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.
- English grammar is no longer a separate subject today; however, it falls under the area of Language Conventions. As long as students can write well-structured sentences with appropriate tenses, they are fine.
- English vocabulary is important, and students must know the meanings of words and have reasonable accuracy in choosing words for their speaking and writing tasks.
- The kind of English students need to master to enter selective schools is very difficult. Any tests here that have been marked with the label 'challenging' are very difficult. Even native English speakers may find them difficult.
- Taking tests in other areas, such as science and math, gives foreign students a clear idea of what they need to learn to be able to survive when they study overseas.
- To do listening tests, go to the Listening Assistant. For speaking and dictation tests, use the Speech Assistant. For writing tests, use the Writing Assistant.
The web utilities can work on mobile phones and the ones that requires voice recording works better on the mobile phones while others work better on a laptop using Google Chrome browser.
There are many web apps available that help students improve their English speaking, listening, and writing with the support of AI. Please check out the YouTube channels for more information. There are also gifted programs to help students prepare for selective school and scholarship tests.
